Description

First held in 1988, Rally Australia has a history of staging a world-class event that is admired and enjoyed by both the motorsport community as well as fans from around Australia and across the globe.

Established in the city of Perth, Western Australia, the inaugural event was held as a round of the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, with Rally Australia elevated to a round of the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship the following year.

Rally Australia quickly earned a reputation for innovation and excellence, pioneering and refining many aspects of world-class rallying events that are seen across the globe today.

Rally Australia was among the first in the world to use cloverleaf stage formats, conduct a ‘super special stage’ to bring the rally to the heart of a city and its people, utilise electronic timing and refine it to score to a tenth of a second and electronically track cars as they compete on stages.

The 19 previous events were all staged in Perth. The 20th running of Rally Australia will be staged for the first time on the East Coast.

Rally greats such as Juha Kankkunen, Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Tommi Makinen, Marcus Gronholm and current day hero Sébastien Loeb have all tasted success at Rally Australia, with Australia’s own Chris Atkinson achieving an outstanding fifth place on his Rally Australia debut back in 2004 driving a Group N class Subaru.
A History of Achievement

Over the years Rally Australia has earned a reputation for setting the standard and raising the bar in terms of hosting a World Rally Championship event.

As a result, Rally Australia has long been a favourite among drivers, teams, officials, media and most importantly, the fans and spectators, who have benefited from the ever-evolving nature of the rally, as to continue to provide the best experience possible for the public.

Rally Australia has earned the coveted Rally of the Year Award, voted by WRC teams, on three occasions, in 1995, 1999 and 2000. Rally Australia was also voted as the Best Promoted Rally Award in 1997 and the Award for Excellence in Creative and Professional Organisation in 1998, both accolades determined by the World Rally Teams Association. Rally Australia also picked up the Best World Rallye Award as voted by the Rally Press Association in 1997.

Home-grown recognition has also been forthcoming, with Rally Australia winning the 1998 National Sponsorship Award in the Sports and Athlete category, presented by the respected Australian Financial Review.
A Hallmark Event

There are very few World Championship events that return to a particular country on a biennial basis. There are even fewer World Championship events that can be staged in a regional location on a recurring basis.

The FIA World Rally Championship presents New South Wales with the unique opportunity to showcase its Northern Rivers Region to a worldwide audience, with the additional opportunity to maintain and further enhance Sydney’s international brand and reputation as a global city.

Through strategically targeted media and manufacturer-supported pre-event activities, Sydney’s recently attained status as “Number One City Brand in the World” and reputation for cultural diversity can be reinforced.
